Villanova football considering joining Big East

IF VILLANOVA WANTS its football program to move up from the Football Championship Subdivision level to join the Big East, all the university has to do is say yes.

The Daily News has learned that the Big East, one of six BCS conferences, has asked the Wildcats to make the jump. "The Big East very recently communicated its interest in adding Villanova as a football member," Villanova athletic director Vince Nicastro told the Daily News yesterday. "As a result, we have decided to embark on an in-depth evaluation of this opportunity.

In these economic times...probably not going to happen.  Their stadium is barely big enough for a 1-AA program and the way it is built it is probably not expandable.  Hopefully they do not make the mistake Temple did by trying to use the Eagles stadium.  The campus is small relative to the other Big East schools.  Very much a liberal arts environment that would probably get eaten up in recruiting wars with other 1-A programs like Pitt, Louisville, UConn., West Virginia.  It would cost a mint to bring the athletic facilities up to standard of the Big East football programs.  Even if they spent the money to build the facility, the new facility would be the most inpressive building on what is a very quaint campus.  They are having success where they are so hopefully they will leave it alone.

Most likely a classic case of why the Bible says "don't think more highly of yourself than you ought".

I think it is very interesting.  I mean Villanova would get creamed for a few seasons but I think they would become a .500 DI-A football program.

You are on point!  Villanova's campus is land locked, and the prices of the homes in the area make it prohibitive to buy and build especially a football stadium to FBS standards.  If the Wildcats buy a track of land away from the campus, you may run the risk of not having strong student support.

Delaware, one of Villanova's football rivals already has a 22,000 seat stadium and land to expand, and they aren't looking to move up.

Good luck to the Wildcats if they make the move.  The use UCONN as a template and plan and not make the move up based on emotions.

No need for this. Villanova already has a leg up on its Big 5 rivals (with the exception of Penn) by having FCS football. No one else has it (I think LaSalle has non-scholarship football).

Kids won't choose or not choose Villanova because it's FBS or FCS.

If Nova decides to go and they energize their fan base/alumni/surrouding community, I believe the money will roll in and we could see some amazing developments and enhancements that we didn't think would or could happen.  I like the idea!!
