DURHAM -- N.C. Central football coach Mose Rison fully expects quarterback Michael Johnson to be in uniform and ready to start Saturday when the Eagles host Winston-Salem State in their second game.
Johnson was held out of NCCU's season-opening 59-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith because he had not received his annual clearance by the NCAA to play. On Tuesday at his weekly news conference, Rison said he still was waiting for Johnson's clearance but that his status within the team has not changed.
"Michael Johnson is still our starting quarterback," Rison said. "I announced to the team [Monday] that he is our starting quarterback. He will still take the majority of reps at No. 1 and Keon [Williams] will take the backup reps.
"Right now, I am preparing Michael Johnson to be the starting quarterback on Saturday until I am told differently."
Williams found out on Thursday night that he was going to start the opener for NCCU and delivered a solid performance that Rison called the best game of his college career. Williams went 14-of-22 for 110 yards and four touchdowns.
"I think he played his best game, no question about it," Rison said. "He played within himself. I thought Keon Williams looked like a player who had been in this system for some time. He clearly understands it, and I thought he did a magnificent job running out offense."
But even if Johnson is able to return to the lineup, NCCU will be without a couple of reserve defensive players against the Rams.
Defensive tackle Charles Goodwin was ejected in the fourth quarter along with three Johnson C. Smith players for an on-field altercation. Rison said a subsequent review of the incident has resulted in backup linebacker Roger Stewart being suspended for Saturday's game against Winston-Salem State. Rison said Stewart threw a punch during the incident.
"We talk with the kids about sportsmanship," Rison said. "There was nothing for us to do other than keep playing hard, stay healthy and get off the field and get the game over.
"There was a lot of little chippy stuff going on, and we got caught in it. Some of my kids made a mistake."
Overall, Rison said he was pleased with the effort in the opener, though he had not expected the outcome to be so lopsided.
"We thought the kids executed every facet of the game plan," Rison said. "I was really, really pleased with the way the defense played. We made [Johnson C. Smith] one dimensional, and they couldn't run the football."
As a result of their dominating performance against Johnson C. Smith, three NCCU players earned honorable mention honors this week for the College Football Performance Awards in the Football Championship Subdivision, including Williams, Stewart and linebacker Calvin Hillie.
Stewart had two solo stops, including a tackle for a loss, and returned an interception 83 yards for a touchdown. Hillie led the Eagles with six tackles, including four solo and a sack.

I like the fact that the eagles are so confident! It makes victory that much sweeter. This ram team is not the kind of team they have been used to seeing, so they better be ready. The aggies were as confident as the eagles are and you see what happened to them. WSSU 28 NCCU 21
