2010 Morehouse College Maroon Tigers Football Preview by Jarrett Carter

by Jason Kirk • Aug 30, 2010 10:30 AM EDT

The 2010 edition of the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers will be all about replacements. The Tigers have never had a losing season in three years under head coach Rich Freeman, and have never lost more than four games in a season during his tenure.

But with significant departures among the SIAC’s elite teams, 2010 brings a “now-or-never” urgency to replace the Tigers’ complacency with championship contention. Fans should reasonably expect MC to challenge for its first SIAC football title since its share of the crown in 2001 with Fort Valley State and Tuskegee.
2009

Morehouse finished fourth in the overall conference standings and fourth in total defense. What they did not have in solid offense, they made up for in a turnover-creating pass defense that finished the year with 17 interceptions -- three returned for touchdowns.
The Good

MC returns much of its top-five defense from a season ago. They boast the conference’s best linebacker in junior Charlie Wilson (7.5 sacks, four INTs in '09) and one of the conference’s best running backs in sophomore David Carter (677 rushing yards, seven TDs).

They also feature the best special teams unit in the conference, returning all-conference place kicker and punter Ian Mullen (14-19 FGs in 09’) and a kickoff return unit that led the conference with an averaged 23.7 yards per return last year.
The Bad

Quarterback is still in question at the 'House. William Brack (Six passing TDs, 10 INTs in 09’) will likely be replaced by senior DaJuan Thigpen (371 yards, Four TDs, Two INTs), who has just 55 career snaps for MC but saw extended action in the second half of last season. Morehouse will also need to find replacements for NFL draftee and all-SIAC lineman Ramon Harewood and all-SIAC second team receiver Achille Hendje, whose six touchdown receptions accounted for more than half of the team’s scoring output in the category.

You are surely kidding. Why move up when you are having problems competing at the D II level? I will believe it, when I see it.

Bigdaddy, please put down your pipe. If you look at the last 10 years we have the best overall sports program in the coonference. So we haven`t won a football title . Big deal !

Best overall sports program?Huh? I beg to differ.

ASU has that hands down, no questions asked. I'm not trying to come down on Morehouse because they're indeed my second fav Smiley rite in the conference, but I think your statement is off base.

Sounds nice but I seriously doubt that. We just cut a sports program last year. There's also that hefty million dollar fee that has to be paid to apply for FCS...among other expenses.  no I just don't see that happening anytime soon.  If I'm wrong, thats cool!  Wink

nevertheless, lets deal with THE NOW.
....DIVISION II, SIAC FOOTBALL!

GO GET THOSE WILDCATS, TIGERS!!!!!!

You can differ but we have the little gold award  they give out for it. And we have gotten that award four of the last five years and we expect to get it again this year. I am not for giving the NCAA Sh!t. I don`t want to go FCS i want the kick the be jesus out of the curry goats, yellow tiggers and blue puddy cats.

Morehouse has never been taken serious in regards to football.  Yeah, you guys have had a few good teams and some good players in your history but most of the all-conference awards have come because of cross country/track & field/golf/tennis (half of which most schools in our conference have no teams, which allows you to easily earn points for the trophy every year).   no
