Col, people can die in Tropical Storms, but Cat III storms ARE KILLERS.

SERIOUSLY; the probablility of mortality goes up with the strength of the storm for ALL causes and of course, the NUMBER of people who die goes up proportionately.

The stronger the storm, the greater the damage, the greater the chances of someone dying.

And not just from drowning or tree falls. But from Carbon Monoxide poisoning and electricution. From Allergies to mold and ant stings. And of COURSE from stress related heart attacks.

A Cat III storm WILL disrupt electrical and water/sewer service for extended periods of time.

so you are a wise man.

After Katrina don't worry about me evacuating. I will be OUT.  Seriously, I'm keeping my eye on Earl. Wink

Born and raised here in Florida. Lived through SEVERAL Hurricanes from the early '60s on. My family NEVER evacuated for ANY reason during a storm.

After going to Homestead 2 days AFTER Andrew passed through and working Environmental Health for 2 weeks I learned my lesson.

The people that stayed were miserable. In every possible way you can imagine.

Remember; before the man made disaster of Katrina, Andrew was the poster child for American Destruction and third world conditions. Hugo was tough too..., but that was mostly water.

Andrew was a killer with wind, so yeah I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR.

Cholly, thanks for the advice. You right Andrew was no joke. My brother was stationed at Homestead AFB  during that time and he told me all the horror stories.

cholly, hugo was more than water.  tell the people in charlotte it was mostly water.  hugo was still hurricane force when it hit the queen city.  it was the wind that snapped the tops of pine trees not water.  my granddaddy lost power for two weeks because of hugo and he didn't get one drop of rain.

I guess somehow the meaning of the words "Hugo was tough too..." ESCAPED your comprehension. Roll Eyes

More people were killed during Hugo (counting P.R. and Carribean fatalities) than Andrew (82 to 68) but the damage costs for Andrew were double to tripple the costs from Hugo.

Additionally, while people in some cases went for a few weeks without power after Hugo, there were parts of South Dade County that went 6 months without electrical service.

But this is a DIVERSION. Roll Eyes

As I CLEARLY said earlier... Anything ABOVE a Catagory III storm is a KILLER, and SHOULD be taken VERY seriously.

I have several plans, depending on direction and how severe the storm is.
If they say leave, I pack up and split.  shrug

^^^Spoken like a TRUE South Florida Resident. nod clap nod

After a major storm it takes a couple days at least under the BEST of circumstances to get help in from other parts of the State and or Federal Government.... and that was BEFORE george bush gutted FEMA.

Best to pack your bags and head for kin folk or a hotel outside the 5 day cone of prediction.  nod

don't change the subject.  hugo had major wind damage.  i went through south carolina two weeks after hugo.  i was in charleston and charlotte three weeks after hugo.  the damage was wind.  the trees stacked up on i-95 was from wind.  the pine trees on the south carolina coast that was snapped and sent flying inland was from the wind.  of course there is water in a hurricane.  the rain is horrible.  if the hurricane makes landfall during high tide there will be more water damage.  hurricane hugo did more wind damage than water.  instead of admitting you were wrong you bring up a body count.  counting the dead is not the end all in storm damage.

as usual you have nothing to say so you go to name calling.  you have such a limited vocabulary.  you said hugo was mostly water.  it wasn't.  hugo was mostly wind.  hugo still had hurricane force winds when he hit charlotte, nc.  it was wind, not mostly water, that caused most of the hugo damage.  ask the people that lived in charlotte and the greenville-spartanburg area and points to the coast about the vortices.

once again cholly has nothing to offer so he refers to name calling and profanity.
