He went to 'skegee..

I think NOVA = Northern VA

I agree with Valley Girl .
Up this way..we use NO.Va to distinguish the part of Va. that is closest to the District as opposed to the downstate and westward areas of the state.

I never thought NoVaSkegee was trying to bash FAMU...I just thought he was posting some information.

However, we Rattlers are proud of our school. And we support our university because it a precious resource that we intend to keep operational no matter what.

I may catch some flak for this. But here goes. I'm all for aggressive growth , but some HBCU's  have not  created the infrastructure to match.
Seems lie every year we hear of schools with records number of freshmen , but chaos in housing and the like. Also I'm still not sold on increase of donations to match the spike in admissions.

The top five HBCU's endowments are with schools with the exception of Howard that have less than 10,000 students. The problem is frankly HBCU have stressed giving back t the current student body. Coupled with the crippling student loan debt many HBCU grads leave with.

I'm sure in the not too distant future an HBCU will have 20,000 students. but if that schools endowment fund is five million , then there is a serious disconnect somewhere. shrug. Nothing wrong with bringing more students into the HBCU fold but if we fail to graduate sustainable numbers than it may not be in our best interest to expand so quickly.

Cuz, he WAS trying to bash the school after his initial post.

This is what he does. He'll start a thread, post lots of data, then use it to bash some HBCU, black politician, or institution in the head with it.

He has repeated this pattern over and over again with respect to HBCUs in general and FAMU in particular, so make NO mistake; he WAS trying to slam our school.

Bison: I agree with what you said and I also agree with what NOVA said. I also like what Valley Girl has said and she is absolutely correct about the comparison of numbers of GAs three HBCUs to the large HBCUS maintaining the large numbers.

In strategic planning you have to look at the balance of things:

Current Students
1) what type of students are we bringing in 2) how is our retention rate 3) how is our graduation rate 4) have we adequately prepared for growth in academics and housing 5) how is our Student Life 6) how is our Recruitment

Once They Graduate
1) what type of careers are our "recent" alumni entereing into 2) what are we doing to appreciate that cadre of recent graduates in that 5-10 year span 3) how are we adhering to the 20-30  year alumni(who are fastly become the old school alumni) 4) what is capital campaign geared toward( the tangible goals, the seeable goals for the laymen) 6) how do we engage ALUMNI in the universtiy outside homecoming (a) is the Administartion welcoming or standoffish (b) what is Alumni Affairs doing (c) what is the Alumni Volunteer Corps doing (d) what is the National Alumni Association doing, what is their make-up

When you look at these infrastructure items then you can really begin to move...

BTW...

Let me add that had Dr. Humpheries been allowed to remaing in place at FAMU there is a VERY good chance that the school would have reached the 15,000 student body mark by now and would be well on the way to 18,000 and the ultimate goal of 20,000.

Remember; gainous and cast-hell bryant were installed at FAMU by jeb bush to DESTROY it from within. That not only included an intense negative PR campaign of deliberate lies, but DIRECT sabotage of critical programs campus wide.

We ALMOST lost accreditation and were placed on probation by SACS. We had a string of negative Audits by the State after 3 decades of CLEAN audits. We lost multiple MILLIONS of dollars in federal programs and grants, and research was brought to a halt. Recruitment programs were shutdown and de-funded. Small business and community outreach programs were eliminated. Morale among the faculty, staff, and students was sent to an all-time low, the Marching Band was cut in half, and then there was the I-A SCAM designed to cripple the Athletic Department while simultaneously enriching a few greedy old black republiklans who DIRECTLY stood to profit from stadium expansion.

ALL of this was in the papers and on the news 24/7/365 for the 6 years of the bush reign of terror and as a consequence, not only was FAMUs growth halted, but enrollment dropped TREMENDOUSLY... all part of the bush plan to shut the University down.

The fact that FAMU is at 13,000 students so soon after republiklan Legislators were calling for its CLOSURE is a testiment to the leadership of Dr. Ammons, the faculty, staff, student body, and alumni of the school, all made possible by the support of Governor Crist and the black lawmakers who took a stand for our survival.

In regard to the infrastructure thing:

It's kind of a Catch 22

Most places can't get the funding for better infrastructure, you have to show that you have the bodies to justify the expense..

I see what you're saying though..

I remember back in the early 80's, I think FAMU's enrollment was about 5,000 students?  Tenn State's enrollment was about 7500 students. Its interesting to see how much FAM's enrollment has grown over the years. I keep thinking with TSU being the only public hbcu in the state of Tennessee, that their enrollment should have also broken the 10,000 mark long before now...I think its about 9500 students now. If I am wrong, I am sure NOVA will post figures letting me know the correct number.  Grin Growth is good - growth in enrollment is good; growth in programs is definitely good. Growth in endowments is excellent!

I think we get a lot of interesting information on this board.  nod

I dont have to assume it is in pure black and white on this board, if something comes up with FAMU; you automatically go back to the Gainous and Castell blame game. I am not a graduate of FAMU; nor did I want to attend FAMU. I dont like or dislike FAMU, got family members who are graduates; but the fact remains the same that Gainous and Castell are gone and your beloved Dr. Ammons is at the helm and stop looking in the rearview mirror...
