Are there any left in your state?  I did a research paper in the 10th grade during Black History Month on Black schools in North Carolina during segregation.  I found out there was at least 1 Black HS in every county of the state but there are only 4 remaining.  I would say 5 but Im not sure if Carver in Winston Salem is historically black.

What about Carver, Wenonah and J-O in BHM?  Though, Parker did have that one white female valedictorian a few yrs ago....

Branj, I did not know that Parker is historically Black.  Are there any alums of any Black HSs on this board?  If so, give some history of your alma maters.  I am proud graduate of E. E. Smith Senior HS in Fayetteville.  We are the Golden Bulls, founded in 1927, have thousands of successful alums and a great heritage.

Drumma -

Yes, A H Parker High School is a historically black high school in BHM.  It was one of two that my parents could attend in the late 40's early 50's - Ullman was the other, which ultimately became part of UAB.  My parents were raised on the east side of town (Kingston) and walked to and fro Parker every day.

Carver High in Winston Salem is named for Georgw Washington Carver.   There are now 6 orignially black high schools in NC.  Atkins High in Winston Salem re-opened a few years ago after being closed for nearly 30 years.

I know Carver and Wenonah are still open but I don't know if Wenonah was originally Black.  Carver is in a new building in North Birmingham.  They closed West End, and Jones Valley.  These kids now go to Wenonah.

Shelt -

I'm not sure either, but I went there for first and second grades and it was 100% black.  It was originally part of the Jefferson County school system but was annexed into BHM City back in 70.

Yep, those merger schools got some serious issues.  My mom taught at JO and whan they built the new one, them fools from Ensley were straight up tearing stuff up because the sign out front said JO and not Ensley.  I'm hearing similar about Wenonah too.  My bro and sis went to Jones Valley.  When I do make it back tothe hood, the cats there all complain about having to go to HS with the West End and Wenonah kids - bitter rivalries from grade school that still exist today....

No....I don't think Wenonah has always been Black.  Parker was the first in B'ham.  My older brother would know so I will check with him.   At one point Parker had so many students that it had two daily school sessions.  One group went in the morning and another set of students had school in the afternoon.  That went on until Carver and Ullman were built......not exactly sure when those two were constructed but it was probably around 1950?

In addition to BTW here in Atlanta, The Campuses of Carver is also a Historically Black HS.

Off of the top of my head, these are the Historically Black High Schools still operating in GA, even if they are under a different name:

Atlanta: Booker T. Washington, Campuses of Carver
Albany: Monroe
Augusta: Lucy C. Laney
Columbus: Spencer, Carver
Macon: Appling, which is now known as NE Macon; Ballard-Hudson, which is now SW Macon
Savannah: Beach Institute, now known as Beach HS

Burke High School      Charleston, SC.
W.J. Keenan              Columbia, SC

C.A. Johnson             Columbia, SC
Wilson High School    Florence, SC

RIP (Terrell's Bay High School) Centenary, SC

I'm sure its some I left off but those are the ones right off the top of my head...

You must have been reading my mind.  I was going to bring up HBHSs in a thread about state championships.

Dudley

Atkins

Carver

West Charlotte

E.E. Smith

Hillside.

I THOUGHT I'd heard Ligon was going to be a HS again.  I guess it's still a MS.
