Do you think there is much difference in the mind of a kid when he/she is deciding to attend a DI HBCU or a DII? Personally if I were at that point I would select a D2 school just so I could have the opportunity to play and win championships. I would not attend a DI HBCU based solely on sports, period! In 20 years I will want to be ale to say that I was on the team that won the conference and went to the playoffs. I will take Virginia Union's national championships over the play in game of the Ncaa Tourney.

Beleive it or not, some kids like to play against major competition. I suspect if there is a D-I school that wants these kids then WSSU will lose their best players.

True. But to listen to some of y'all, if these kids could have gone to another D-1 school, they would have before coming to WS...

I guess you are right Epjr, when you're 18, you think you're all of that. You're the greatest ball player that ever stepped up. You know you are eventually going to be discovered. Do you Cat remember when reality about life finally walked up and smacked you back down to earth? I do, it was a very sobering moment.

As a matter of fact the players did not know that they were signing on to a D II program.      When the basketball players were told that we were going back to D II by the chancellor they walked out of the meeting.  The coach had to make them return.
As was mentioned before when our "coward" of a chancellor made the announcement to the football team, I almost initiated a confrontation with a player.  Notice I said that he initiated the and walked toward the player.

Ram could it have been an issue of self worth that made those players walk out? You know the feeling that somehow the  DI status is so much more important than DII at any cost. "I play for a DI school",  ignoring the fact  the team might be 5-20?  shrug i know as it relates to the Aggies, somehow DII is second class citizenship.

Interesting comment regarding DI/DII status.  I guess as we get older the differences between divisions diminishes if it really existed.

I was with a fellow alum at a college fair in NYC last Saturday who wore one of his two NCAA Championship rings from his days on Lincoln's Track & Field team.  The ring was tastefully gaudy with an orange stone.  He told me the other ring had the blue stone.  At any rate many of the college students who visited Lincoln's table were just impressed with the ring and the fact that he was a two time national champion and 4x All-American.  When you think about it, out of all the college athletes through the years, how many can be called national champions?

Aggies don't look at D-II as second class. We just think that of NCCU.  lol  Perhaps these kids think they'll upset a team or two before they graduate. Perhaps it presents a rare opportunity to shine on national tv?

What makes you think they didn't receive other D1 scholarship offers?

I've spoken to some of our football players and basketball players in the past. And I asked them how do they like playing against competition like Rutgers and Kentucky, and they love it. So I guess it's a mind set.

Coming home to the CIAA sounds good to me for the Mighty WSSU Crimson and Scarlet Running Gunning Rams. Nothing wrong with realizing that you are not ready for the next level. Congratulations. nod clap

Height certainly helps but if they're "tall and that's all" then it won't do much good. Besides you're gonna need great guard play to "dominate" the CIAA.

I concur with whomever said that "who says these kids didn't have othe D1 offers"? It's a bit presumptive to think they did not have other D1 offers simply because they went to WSSU.

It understandable that one would prefer VUU championships to mere NCAA appearances or big boy beatdowns...BUT..who OTHER than VUU and St Aug is consistently winning national championships?

lol sorry, but that was funny.  I will like to encourage you to continue to support WSSU.  I can understand how you feel, but you guys are still WSSU.  No division can take that away.

This is such a bad attitude to take.  You sound just BIG GRAY of NCCU.  Is WSSU only about athletics to you?  What about the academic side of the University.   They will still need your support.   Direct your money to academics if you don't want to support athletics.
