We were just talking about Gil Scott last week.  Heard he had moved to Europe and was recording there.  I have always loved him.  I was young when he came out but even as a little girl he captivated me.  I think it was his song Angel Dust that captivated me...and made me want to hear what he was talking about every time he had an album come out.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

By Gil Scott-Heron

You will not be able to stay home, brother.
You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out.
You will not be able to lose yourself on skag and skip,
Skip out for beer during commercials,
Because the revolution will not be televised.

The revolution will not be televised.
The revolution will not be brought to you by Xerox
In 4 parts without commercial interruptions.
The revolution will not show you pictures of Nixon
blowing a bugle and leading a charge by John
Mitchell, General Abrams and Spiro Agnew to eat
hog maws confiscated from a Harlem sanctuary.
The revolution will not be televised.

The revolution will not be brought to you by the
Schaefer Award Theatre and will not star Natalie
Woods and Steve McQueen or Bullwinkle and Julia.
The revolution will not give your mouth sex appeal.
The revolution will not get rid of the nubs.
The revolution will not make you look five pounds
thinner, because the revolution will not be televised, Brother.

There will be no pictures of you and Willie May
pushing that shopping cart down the block on the dead run,
or trying to slide that color television into a stolen ambulance.
NBC will not be able predict the winner at 8:32
or report from 29 districts.
The revolution will not be televised.

There will be no pictures of pigs shooting down
brothers in the instant replay.
There will be no pictures of pigs shooting down
brothers in the instant replay.
There will be no pictures of Whitney Young being
run out of Harlem on a rail with a brand new process.
There will be no slow motion or still life of Roy
Wilkens strolling through Watts in a Red, Black and
Green liberation jumpsuit that he had been saving
For just the proper occasion.

Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, and Hooterville
Junction will no longer be so damned relevant, and
women will not care if Dick finally gets down with
Jane on Search for Tomorrow because Black people
will be in the street looking for a brighter day.
The revolution will not be televised.

There will be no highlights on the eleven o'clock
news and no pictures of hairy armed women
liberationists and Jackie Onassis blowing her nose.
The theme song will not be written by Jim Webb,
Francis Scott Key, nor sung by Glen Campbell, Tom
Jones, Johnny Cash, Englebert Humperdink, or the Rare Earth.
The revolution will not be televised.

The revolution will not be right back after a message
about a white tornado, white lightning, or white people.
You will not have to worry about a dove in your
bedroom, a tiger in your tank, or the giant in your toilet bowl.
The revolution will not go better with Coke.
The revolution will not fight the germs that may cause bad breath.
The revolution will put you in the driver's seat.

The revolution will not be televised, will not be televised,
will not be televised, will not be televised.
The revolution will be no re-run brothers;
The revolution will be live.

Whitey On The Moon

By Gil Scott-Heron

A rat done bit my sister Nell.
(with Whitey on the moon)

Her face and arms began to swell.
(and Whitey's on the moon)

I can't pay no doctor bill.
(but Whitey's on the moon)

Ten years from now I'll be payin' still.
(while Whitey's on the moon)

The man jus' upped my rent las' night.
('cause Whitey's on the moon)

No hot water, no toilets, no lights.
(but Whitey's on the moon)

I wonder why he's uppi'n me?
('cause Whitey's on the moon?)

I wuz already payin' 'im fifty a week.
(with Whitey on the moon)

Taxes takin' my whole damn check,
Junkies makin' me a nervous wreck,
The price of food is goin' up,
An' as if all that s**t wuzn't enough:

A rat done bit my sister Nell.
(with Whitey on the moon)

Her face an' arm began to swell.
(but Whitey's on the moon)

Was all that money I made las' year
(for Whitey on the moon?)

How come there ain't no money here?
(Hmm! Whitey's on the moon)

Y'know I jus' 'bout had my fill
(of Whitey on the moon)

I think I'll sen' these doctor bills,
Airmail special:
(to Whitey... on... the... moon)

I am truely a GSH fan.  I have everything he has ever recorded and have loved his music since 1973-74.  I will definitely get this one.  He is also an HBCU product, he attended Cheyney State in the late 60's.  He was (is) one of those who was ahead of his time.  Some of the things he recorded 30 years ago are very prevelant today.

KHawk:

A point of correction, Gil-Scott Heron who was know by his nickname "Spiderman" attended Lincoln University of Pennsylvania.  I was on the yard when GSH was there and playing Bid Whist in the Student Union Building and doing other things on campus  Wink .

It was at Lincoln that Gil Scott Heron met and hooked up with Brain Jackson, his keyboard musician, drummer Bob Adams, and bassist Danny Bowens were all students when they collaborated on "Winter In America".

GSH attended Lincoln because it was the alma mater of his biggest influence Langston Hughes.

Cholly, Thanks for sharing, I'm going out today to get my copy!  nod

LU,

Thanks for correcting me.  I definitely want to state the facts and give this brother the correct recognition he deserves.  I remember when I was stationed in Germany in 1989-90 I was playing some GSH (albums at the time) and a friend of my wife's came over to our house.  She heard the GSH and couldn't believe her ears.  She was like "you heard of GSH" and said that she also was at Lincoln during the time he was a student there as well.

I knew it was an HBCU in PA and I got it twisted.  Thanks again and keep those tidbits coming.

I was at Lincoln from 1971-1975, and at that time the enrollment was only about 1,000 - 1,200 students, so everybody knew each other!

I'll PM you and pass on info you can share with your wife's Lincoln friend if they are still in contact with each other.  Lincoln has a very inclusive Alumni Directory, that keeps us all in contact with each other.  Even with Facebook and all alot of alums rely on the directory along with Roarunit.com.

Don't forget "H20gate Blues" from "Winter in America", with many classic lines.  "If Nixon knew, Ag new, but Ag didn't new enough to stay out of jail".   "Haldeman, Erlichmann, Mitchell, and Dean, it follows a pattern if you can dig what I mean".  Gil's take on the many types of blues is also classic.
