To ALL the Onnidan Ladies and men who care about the women in their lives....
Cholly:
PLEASE ignore the recent report by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommending AGAINST routine screenings for Breast Cancer starting at age 40.
in 2007, 30% of ALL early detection Breast Cancers were found in people under 50.... THIRTY PERCENT!
The recommendation by that so-called non-partisan pannel was just a political ploy to de-rail Health Reform. EVERY major medical organization disputes it and STRONGLY encourages you to ignore it.
Women should have a baseline mammogram done at age 30 when the Breasts are most dense, then begin routine screening on an ANNUAL BASIS at age 40.
Women should perform Breast self exams at least once per month starting at age 30 and twice per month at age 40.
Men, who BTW make up 1% of all Breast Cancer cases, should also perform a self exam at least once per month.
The report released last month was deliberately timed to cause confusion and fear about governmental efforts to change the Health Care Insurance industry. It has VERY little basis in actualy PUBLIC HEALTH and this fact is punctuated by the number of professional groups and organizations that have come out forcefully AGAINST the flawed recommendations in it.
This report that has been UNIVERSALLY criticized by The American Cancer Society, The National Cancer Institute, The American College of Radiology, The American Board of Radiology, The American Society of Radiologic Technicians, The American Medical Association, The National Medical Association, The National Public Health Association and almost EVERY State Health Department in the Country.
PLEASE ignore it, and continue to get yourselves screened... and fellas, insist that the women in your lives do the same.
It could mean the difference between life and death.
Cholly:
BTW... if you don't trust old Chollys advice, then PLEASE consult with your General Practicioner/Family Doctor; they'll tell you the same thing.
Remember; Breast Cancer is VERY treatable if caught early, and that's what mammograms are VERY good at doing.... ESPECAILLY with the new digital technology available to most radiologists.
So continue to get those ta-tas mashed and live long and happy lives! ;D

old news cholly. doctors have been all over the networks saying they would not follow those guidelines. doctors were even on the tv stations in richmond saying they were not going to follow those guidelines. i'm sure since this came out during sweeps many local tv stations did the same thing.
thirdeye:
Thank you Cholly. My grandmother passed from Breast Cancer :'( and I must admit that I have not been as diligent as I need to be. So, your words spoke to me. Much love to you.
Cholly:
thirdeye a significant portion of women who develop breast cancer DO NOT have any risk factors, however, since you do, you should REALLY take care of yourself.
IF you are over 30 and don't have that baseline mammogram, get one ASAP. If you are over 40 then you should get mammograms done TWICE a year at a minimum, and do your breast self exams weekly. You should also visit your GP and let them know that you are concerned and want to establish a baseline study for comparison purposes.
Mammography is different now than it was just a few years ago. With newer digital X-rays, improved ultrasound and now breast MRIs there are a WIDE array of imaging modalities to catch it early and treat it.
Remember; aside from skin cancer, Breast Cancer is the #1 cause of cancer in American women and the SECOND leading cause of cancer deaths among most non-hispanic women.
It's VERY important that you look out for yourselves ladies.
